SUMMARY
The hormonal illusion – clinical aspects of pseudopregnancy in bitches
Pseudopregnancy in the bitch represents an evolutionary adaptation associated with the species’ social structure and pack behavior. The pathophysiological basis of this condition is linked to normal hormonal fluctuations occurring during the luteal phase of the estrous cycle. Despite being a physiological phenomenon, the clinical manifestations of pseudopregnancy – particularly lactation and behavioral alterations – can pose significant challenges for both the animal and its caregiver. This article reviews the key clinical aspects of pseudopregnancy in bitches, including the underlying endocrine mechanisms, commonly observed somatic signs and behavioral changes, as well as current approaches to management, with emphasis on both hormonal therapies and non-pharmacological treatment modalities.
