Urolithiasis, i.e., the retention of stones in the kidneys or ureters, may lead to the development of hydronephrosis. The most common stones are struvite and calcium oxalate stones. Sometimes hydronephrosis and urolithiasis are detected accidentally when imaging tests (X-ray and ultrasound) are performed for another reason.
