SUMMARY
Purebred dogs – love or hate?
The discussion about purebred dogs (and cats), especially with regard to their health, has recently stirred much emotion in the veterinary medicine community. The study “Frequency and distribution of 152 genetic disease variants in over 100,000 mixed breed and purebred dogs” found that mixed breed dogs and purebred dogs potentially suffer from many of the same inherited disorders. The results of the study open new possibilities for using genetic testing in mixed breeds. The role of veterinarians is to understand and support reasonable breed health strategies and understand how purebred dog societies contributes to the development of veterinary science. Cooperation with breeder clients can offer additional benefits to veterinary practice if tailored services are offered.
Key words: purebred dogs, genetic tests, breeders, health breed strategy
