SUMMARY

Diet-related dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs

The dogs most frequently diagnosed with DCM are large and giant purebred dogs. DCM is characterized by a mechanical and/or electrical dysfunction of the heart muscle. The causes of cardiomyopathy include primary cardiomyopathy, in which genetic factors play a significant role, and secondary cardiomyopathy, which may be caused by a nutrient deficiency (taurine, L-carnitine, coenzyme Q and others). In recent years, scientific attention has been drawn to taurine deficiency as a risk factor for developing DCM in some breeds of dogs fed grain-free diets.
